Bill Strayhorn was a classically-trained 23 year old pianist/composer from Dayton, Ohio who became the composer and arranger for Duke Ellington's big band in 1939. He continued with Ellington all the way up until his death in 1967 and is the one for whom Ellington wrote the 1966 touching epitaph entitled "...And His Mother Called Him Bill." His name is Billy Strayhorn and he is one of the most successful composers and arrangers of the 20th century.
